The brief called for a multi level residence to take advantage of the high level elevation views of both the ocean and the mountain. The planning is arranged around a circulation axis, juxtaposed to a double wing/barn arrangement with a dynamic offset which sets up multiple external spaces with both exposed north west and protected south east frontages. The formal architectural language is informed by a deliberate attempt to overexpress solid elements and lightweight dynamic facades with articulated timber shutters which allow selective manipulation of views and sunscreening. The solid elements are made predominantly in off shutter concrete, while the shutters are made of Canadian red maple in a vertical arrangement to manage the horizontal path of the sun in the late afternoon.
